Giving business gifts is a way of spreading goodwill among employees, coworkers and business associates. But there are few among us who haven’t received business gifts that we just have no use for. In some cases, the recipient can regift the item or donate it to charity. But all too often, unwanted business gifts end up in the trash.
Here are four business gifts that are likely to end up in landfills:
1. Gift baskets – In some cases, gift baskets make the perfect gift. If you’re sending a food basket to an entire office, for example, there’s a good chance that everything in it will be eaten. But as individual business gifts, they’re not always a good idea. Unless you know the recipient very well and can tailor a basket to suit his tastes, it’s unlikely that all of the items in the basket will be put to use.
2. Books – Some people love to read. Others, not so much. Books can be an economical business gift, but they’re not necessarily a practical one. Even if the recipient is an avid reader, he probably has specific genres that he enjoys reading. And if the book is of a genre that he’s not crazy about, it will likely go unread.
3. Gadgets – Some gadgets are really innovative and useful. Others are just plain silly. If you have the budget to buy your employees new smartphones, it’s a safe bet that they won’t toss them. But that Internet-enabled potato peeler or combination staple remover/letter opener/calculator/tape dispenser just might end up in the trash.
4. Gift cards – Gift cards sound like a great business gift idea, because they allow the recipient to choose her own gift from the merchant. But even gift cards often go to waste because they’re for a store or restaurant that the recipient doesn’t like. Charity gift cards from TisBest.org, however, are unlikely to go to waste. They allow the user to make a donation to their choice of over 250 charity organizations. Just about everyone has a charity or type of charity that they would like to support, so this is one gift card that will almost always be used.
When buying business gifts, it’s important to consider how useful they will be to your employees. When in doubt, a bonus or a donation to charity in the employee’s name are sure to be appreciated.
