The internet didn’t even need search engines in the beginning. With only a few different pages of information, simply entering the address or location of the page was sufficient. As more pages were added to the internet, links within pages to other relevant pages were often all that was needed. Now, the internet is so vast that without a dedicated search engine, we would not be able to find what we need or keep up with new pages being added. Currently search engines serve us pretty well when it comes to navigating the internet. However, as the web continues to evolve our search engines will need to improve as well. While it may be possible that in the future the search engine will go the way of the links page, search engines will remain our main method of finding information on the web for some time. What can we expect from the future of search engines?
Faster Search Results
Search engines will be faster. Large search engines utilize huge data centers filled with computers to help return results to users as fast as possible. The power of these computers is always increasing as well as the power consumption on the decrease. This will allow search engines to fill these data centers with more powerful CPU’s in the computers as well as a higher density of CPU’s in the system. With the improved efficiency of new CPU’s this can be done without any increase in power consumption or cooling capacity.
Better Search Results
The results that a search engine returns will either make or break it with the public. In order to keep returning the best possible results, the major search engines of today have teams of people constantly working to improve the search algorithms used to return results. As we understand more and have more data to reference along those lines, the better the algorithms can be tailored to return the best results given the search. Maybe in the future, the algorithms will not only look at the search, but the person doing the searching to give an even finer level of accuracy to their results.
More Devices
While the internet has been predominantly used on PC’s in the past, the proliferation of other internet enabled devices has in some cases already eclipsed PCs. This trend should continue into the near future. Smart phones are already used for a great deal of web searches and search engines will need to modify their interfaces to continue being relevant on the host of future mobile devices that will be able to search the internet. As the future of search engines continues to bring more technical advances, it is interesting to learn more about the history of search engines and understand where these new advances have came from.
