The concept of window film for use in solar control on glass windows dates back to the early 1960s. solar film is now a standard alternative to using tinted and reflective glass in building and vehicles.
Window film is made up of a polyester substrate which has a scratch resistant coating applied to one side. The other side of the window film has an adhesive layer which allows you to stick the window film to the interior surface of a glass window. Window film can be applied to almost any glass based glazed fixture that has a frame.
Originally solar window film was designed to control the heating and cooling imbalances that result from solar loading. Nowadays there are many types and constructions of solar control and safety window films. Window film is now used for a variety of uses such as solar heat reduction, heat retention, UV protection, privacy, safety and security and even for decorative reasons.
Solar control window film actually reduces heat from the sun within a room by blocking the suns solar radiation (solar energy). The suns solar energy is made up of three components: ultraviolet radiation, visible light and near-infrared radiation which the fine blocks out. Early window films used to reflect the solar radiation back from a window, preventing the warming of inside surfaces normally hit by direct sunlight while still allowing vision through the glass. The efficiencies of solar window films is closely connected to weather conditions, building orientation, window size, and other factors such as exterior shading conditions.
In an age where escalating energy costs are forever being a problem, business and home owners have turned to solar window film to help naturally control the climates of their commercial or residential properties. The main usage of solar window film today is for commercial buildings.
As mention before window films are also used for security and safety reasons. This areas is also a growing market for window film usage. However while some security film blocks out the suns solar radiation, its main usage is to prevent any shards of potential broken glass from injuring occupants if the window was to smash for some reason.
Generally, window film provides a great method of protecting your commercial or residential property from the effects of the sun as well as added safety and security in the events your windows ever get smashed.
