Most of the arts and crafts made in Africa are created by tribal artists in accordance with their cultural traditions, which is why many of them do not bear individual stamps. Despite these cultural restrictions, a lot of African artists still manage to express their creativity and individual styles without too much diversion from their norms of artistic standards. In fact, when a new artwork style is proven to be practically good, it is eventually adapted as part of the tradition.

African artists give their heart and soul to every piece they create; they put value on the art’s meaning more than its aesthetic appearance. They view art as devotion or a spiritual expression than just a job or a source of living. This explains why most of the arts and crafts produced in this continent are used for religious celebrations. They incorporate these with ideas of spiritism, magic and worship.

Most African art products are also used to symbolize the dead and the living; thus, they are often used in honoring ancestors, gods, or kings. Elaborate masks are created to be worn during festive royal occasions, while jewelries are crafted to illustrate power, royalty, wealth, and authority. There are crafted clay and metal sculptures which are attached to the coffins to invite good spirits and get rid of bad ones. Although these pieces are creatively made, they are supposed to be functional first.

Moreover, African arts and crafts are also commonly used during celebrations and festivals. Masks, being Africa’s most common form of art expression, is used to open the events, ceremonies, and other occasions.

They are believed to drive away evil intruders or bring good luck to the celebration. Unlike ordinary masks, African masks are designed to be worn on top the head rather than over the face.

In addition, textile weaving is also part of the African arts and crafts themes. Most African artists express their emotions and imaginations in the different textile products that they produce. These include textile bags, robes, and decorative items. Women usually take charge of creating the fabric, while men take care of the paintings and prints.

Lastly, since African arts and crafts are also engaged in pottery, the products are then designed not only for aesthetic quality, but for functionality as well. As a result, African crafts also serve the purpose of several important home furniture and utensils.
