Once the thought of changing careers just to be hired or locate what may have been considered a good job was rare indeed. Now days it has been determined that for a college graduate just out of school will undergo 16 job changes over their working lifetime. These changes also include as many as 6 career modifications through completely changing careers.
For example my son who graduated in 2000 with a business degree, with minors in Marketing, Accounting and Promotions, was promptly hired as a consultant with a drug marketing firm. All seemed to be moving along nicely in his career path until he realized the scope of his next promotion.
There seemed to be a rising tide of outsourcing to overseas companies the newest influx of consulting research and assignments. Now not being a person to ignore a growing trend in a business segment, he began to evaluate changing careers; which led him to consider the medical field as an alternative option. Upon further analysis, he chose becoming a Dr. of Chiropractic Medicine. Several considerations allowed him to reach this conclusion including:
1. The resounding need of a Chiropractor to physically touch the patient to affect the body adjustment.
2. The local nature of the Doctor’s office.
3. Chiropractors don’t need several years of residency like a normal MD
4. Continued upward growth of the medical fields reflect stability.
Thus at a young age of thirty, he set out with his own doctor’s office in downtown Chicago.
Over 15 years of examining nearly 1000 resumes per week, I have seen the following unusual career changes:
• Any previous job to Sales.
• Manufacturing to Marketing
• Marketing to plant management
• Executive to purchasing/running a Dive shop
• Senior Scientific Manager to Hotel Owner
• Doctor to Professor, etc.
Thusly any career change is possible with or without additional formal education – if an individual wants to change bad enough. Hang on, times they are a changing. www.muchbetterjobs.com
