Virtually everyone who is in possession of a laptop computer will at some point experience ill-timed hard drive failure. There are a number of reasons why laptop hard drives could behave this way. For instance, people at times download viruses or degraded files which might cause the hard disk to collapse. In some cases, the data in the hard drives can be recovered by specialists, but that is not always the case. To avoid this unfortunate situation, most individuals turn to Dell external hard drives, which is a better alternative. Equipped with this external hard drive, one can back up his or her files before it is too late to act.

Dell external hard drives offer their users independence from computer integration and establish communication through connectivity options such as USB. Although they have the capability of storing large amounts of data, they generally maintain a portable size, thus one can easily carry them around. Dell external hard drives also have the ability to function simply and are easily removable from the computer or laptop. Due to this flexibility, these external hard drives have been used in other ways such as:
1. Disk cloning- This copies the contents of a computer hard disk to a different hard disk such as Dell external hard drives. This process is important when shifting to a larger capacity disk or when restoring a disk to an earlier state.
2. Backup of information and files- Backup in information technology is the process of creating copies of data which will be used to bring back the data in the event of a data loss. Data loss is a very common problem among virtually all computer users and thus Dell external hard drives will come in handy when creating a backup.
3. Scratch disk for recording videos and editing applications- There is a space on a computer hard drive known as scratch space, which is the space used for temporary storage only. One can set scratch disks to erase all data at regular times in order for the disk space to be left free for future use. Dell external hard drives are excellent alternatives to use as scratch space instead of computer hard disks.
4. Booting operating system- External hard drives such as those from Dell can be used to boot operating systems in case one is incapable of booting from the CD drive.
