The World of Rugby Football: No Games, Just Sports

There comes a time when mainstream sports like basketball, volleyball, football, and baseball become stale. This is perfectly normal, particularly if you've tried or seen almost every sport. After all, cable sports channels bombard households with 24-hour reruns of hardcourt action topped off with in-game highlights or "Top 5 Plays of the Day". If you're looking for a more competitive sport with more rigorous demands, then you may want to try rugby football.

Rugby is a style of football which is played over 80 minutes and split into 40-minute sections. Each team must have 15 players, each with varying positions. Eight players will play as forwards, which has a role similar to linemen and linebackers in a football game. Seven will play as backs, which is like the backs in football. Game time may last longer depending on how many plays are stopped. Stopped plays occur when the ball goes out of bounds.

Rugby is a crossover of American football and soccer. Players can move the ball by carrying it in their hands or by kicking the ball at any point during the play. The ball cannot be passed to a teammate by the person carrying the ball, but he is allowed to kick it. Scoring can be done in four ways: the try, in which a player carries the ball across his opponent's goal line and touches the ball down; the conversion which is done by kicking the ball through the uprights off the ground after a try; the penalty kick which is awarded after the opposing team's violation; and the dropped goal in which a player kicks the ball over the opponent's goal.

While rugby in Colorado is associated with a lot of body contact and skin bruises, it's also one of the best ways to stay in incredible shape. The sport involves a lot of sprinting, tackling, pushing, and kicking which escalates cardiovascular fitness and endurance to astronomical levels. In addition, players will learn the value of self-discipline, communication, and social interaction.

If you want to give the sport a shot, find a local club or clinic of rugby in Denver. The best aspect of the sport is that anyone can play it, regardless if they are muscle-bound or stick figures. Rugby teams are more than willing to accept everyone and train them to become world-class players.

Playing rugby in Colorado comes with an explainable mystique. For instance, when people hear that you play football or basketball, all you get is a nod or thumbs up. But mention that you play rugby, and people will take a second look at you and be amazed on how you can play such a physically-demanding sport.
