When considering the amount of money, time and skills invested in the innovation and discovery of new drugs, the ability of research companies to improve their rate of success should not be underestimated. Every year, a huge amount of money is invested in research into a range of common and uncommon diseases, among them life-threatening illnesses such as cancer. This kind of work speeds up the drug discovery process and therefore makes it more likely that answers will be found more quickly.

One of the commonly-used tools in this vital process is the availability of biomarker research facilities. Biomarker research facilities are absolutely essential for medicinal chemists who are researching and discovering new drugs, as there is a huge number of different compounds to compare and use together and the availability of the results of previous research can help the test conductor to determine the best course of action. There is no point in making mistakes that have already been made, especially as it wastes precious time. If a scientist looks at previous tests and examines what worked well and what didn’t, it can help them to understand which areas of research they should pursue further.

In the same way, every action carried out and result observed in the new work must also be recorded, regardless of the level of success, as it will be useful for reference in future research. What might seem like an inadequate or insignificant result in one case may prove to be very valuable prior knowledge in a future case.

Medicinal chemistry is an extremely complex subject and requires a huge amount of learning and training. The skills involved in its practice include pharmacology, toxicology, biochemistry and a variety of other scientific areas. It is vital that each researcher understands the QSAR (quantitative structure activity relationship), as this allows tests to be carried out in a much more efficient manner and saves a great deal of time and money in the process.

It also very important that the potential of every situation is maximised, which means that it is essential for members of research teams to work well together towards a common goal. Novel active chemical compounds – known as ‘hits’ – are revealed in a successful drug discovery process and the right QSAR is the key to this. The QSAR may be derived from many sources, such as plants, fungi and bacteria. Hits can also be found when chemical compounds are tested in bulk against biological targets.

Medicinal chemistry research provides the building blocks for developing successful drug treatments and drug innovation plays a key part in this.
