The 40s is a decade for reflection and transition. Many ask if they have done enough in life or if what they are currently doing is satisfying enough to continue with. In college, you are expected to pick a major and career goal and a quarter of a century later, you may realize you made a mistake and want to try something new. The possibilities are there, but after two decades in the same career, starting over again can seem daunting.
The first step is to search yourself and make sure you are passionate about whatever you choose. You don't want to make the same mistake twice and be stuck in a field that is as unfulfilling as the one you have spent most of your adult life in. Do you want to take care of people? Maybe you love food and cooking. Perhaps raising children and helping them with homework all have made you want to educate other children as well.
Next, assess the job market. What industries are growing and thriving? While it's important to choose something that interests you and that you can be passionate about, make sure whatever new career you choose is actively hiring. Jobs in healthcare are plentiful and many states look for secondary school teachers who specialize in English or computers and allow you to get a graduate education degree while already teaching.
And yes, you may have to go back to school to learn a new skill and earn a second degree. You can do this in night and weekend classes, or even through online programs while still working your current job. Do not leave your first career until you have something new established because you don't want to risk extended unemployment in the present economy.
Finding a new career in your 40s is highly doable, but it is going to take work and dedication to find the one that is right for you and establish yourself. However, if it leaves you happier and more satisfied while at work than the last 20 years have, it may be well worth it.
