When applying for programmer jobs it might seem like enough just to get your resume in the right person’s hands to land an interview, which in many cases is not an easy feat. However, once you have an interview scheduled your work has only just begun.
The right preparation before an interview can make the difference between acquiring the position and missing out. The following are tips to consider on your next computer programming job interview:
Where will the interview take place? Interviews nowadays can take place in the office, over dinner, or on a video conference. No matter where the interview takes place or who is present always keep in mind the point of the meeting, to present yourself in the best light possible and to explain your qualifications and skills for the position. What they saw in your resume convinced them that you are a possible candidate so take that and expand on it letting them know what you can bring to the position.
If the interview is done over dinner it is easier to lose track of what you’re there for. It can be easy to get caught up in other conversation, which is good, let them know who you are as a person outside of work, but all the while keep in mind the point of the dinner.
If the interview is a video conference be sure that the area around you is tidy. You don’t want them to see piles of papers stacked up behind you or any disorder surrounding you which could act as a distraction. Be sure that you will not be interrupted by people or ringing telephones. Prepare the situation the best you can before hand.
How can you help their company? The interview is intended for the company to get to know you and what you bring to the table, however, the interview is not all about you and your career goals. They want to know how you can help them. How will your work experience and your skills help to build and benefit their company?
Who will you encounter? No matter where the interview is be nice and friendly to everyone you encounter. This includes the drive to the interview. You never know who might be a part of the interview process, or have a say in the results. From the receptionist and security personnel to the person in the car that you follow into the parking lot, do not be rude to anyone. Plan ahead to have a calm and patient temperament the day of the interview.
What questions do you have? This is nearly always a question asked during interviews for programmer jobs so come to the interview prepared with questions. It is a major turn off to a company if you don’t care enough to do some research and ask some questions about the company or the position. Show curiosity, research the company and ask questions about the company itself, ask questions about the position, ask questions about your supervisor, ask about the organization of leadership, ask about the goals for the coming year.
Are you ready for a problem solving exercise or technical exam? Programming jobs require a lot of technical skills so it is not uncommon for an interview for a computer programming job to include analytical and problem solving exercises. The interviewer wants to see the problem solving that will lead to a solution to a technical problem. You will also want to brush up on your use of standard programming languages as the interviewer might ask you to show your knowledge of coding for various systems and applications.
