Hair loss is the most prevalent side-effect post pregnancy. A lot of women know that the condition cannot be avoided. But, yet when hair loss becomes extreme it gives way to a lot of stress and depression. Why does a woman lose a lot of hair post pregnancy?

Hormonal changes lead to hair loss post pregnancy. This is due to low level of estrogen in the body. Yes… during pregnancy women have a heightened level of progestogene and estrogen in their bodies. Post delivery due to the sudden drop in the above levels it leads the hair to a resting stage. Once the hair rests the hair follicles begin to fall. In fact, extreme hair fall is most common between three to six months post birth of a child.

Another reason that may cause excessive hair loss is related to taking oral contraceptive. Once the birth pill is discontinued it causes hair loss due to the sudden hormonal changes. There isn’t any specific cure to the hair loss post pregnancy but hair loss can be curbed to a great extent. How? Find below some of the temporary reliefs or remedies that can reduce the stress and the problems faced by women related to hair loss post pregnancy?

1. Consult with your doctor so that he suggests medications that can balance the hormone.
2. Avoid hairstyles such as ponytail, tight buns, pigtail or braids that can cause hair fall or add stress to the hair which may lead to hair fall.
3. Consume diets that are rich in nutrients and minerals. Eat more and more of fruits and vegetables as they contain antioxidants which prevent hair loss after pregnancy. Regular intake of these can protect the hair follicle from damage and encourage hair growth.
4. Post pregnancy a womens body gets drained of all the vital nutrients. Post pregnancy when the body lacks such nutrients it needs to be increased. Regular intake of vitamins in the form of foods, pills and other juices are a great source of supplements that will reduce the deficiency in the body and promote hair growth.

There are a number of other things that can promote hair growth and reduce hair loss post pregnancy:

1. Instead of chemically induced shampoos and conditioners try to use shampoos that are gentle to hair. Choose conditioners and shampoos that contain biotin and silica.
2. Avoid combing on wet hair. It will tend to break easily, as post pregnancy the hair follicles become very weak, so breaking or falling of hair can be avoided.
3. Be gentle with the hair, use wide tooth combs instead of the thin or pointed combs, as they tend to cause more hair loss.
4. If a person is prone to using blow dryer to dry your wet hair, try using cooler or lower settings. This will help in reducing the damage to the hair and avoid breakage of fall out of the hair.
5. Eat a diet that is rich in Vitamin B complex, biotin, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and zinc. All of these supplements encourage hair growth and cause less hair fall post pregnancy.
