Tips to Keep your Mind Sharp

While working on a complex problem, instead of focusing too hard on it I often try to be more relaxed with an open mind. I visualize myself at a favorite spot, listening to my favorite piece of music - a daydream if you like. Studies show that the brain is more receptive in a less focused state. Leave time for your mind to wander. I usually walk to or from work so that I have 30 to 40 minutes at the beginning or end of the day - unplugged. At the very least I can relax, but sometimes my mind wanders to (or around) interesting new ideas. Brush your teeth with your left hand if you're right-handed, read out aloud at breakfast, make lists of things that have something in common. These tricks make your brain deal with the unfamiliar so you don't get locked into old thought patterns. Physical and mental exercise is important for maintaining brain health. I get regular exercise by walking each day and playing basketball twice a week for at least two hours; and mental exercise by reading, writing and working through puzzles. Benefit your brain by finding ways to battle email addiction. Addiction involves the brain's dopamine system, which is triggered by both small rewards (seeing a friend, receiving email) and large, addictive stimuli (cocaine and amphetamine). Also, email interrupts work; task switching (fancifully called multitasking) slows performance significantly. So use email as the reward - but not until another job gets done.
