With the Cricket World Cup 2011 now in full swing, we have had a look at the most common injuries to occur in previous World Cup tournaments. This makes for interesting reading, especially when you look at how many top players have already been affected by these common injuries! Take a look at our check list below!
A hamstring strain is the typical cricket injury and no doubt we will see several of them during the course of the tournament.
Groin strains are also typical sports injuries and again this injury has already stuck!
The metatarsal fracture came under intense scrutiny in recent years, especially in England, after players suffered this injury in the run up to previous world cup tournaments.
Medial Collateral Ligament
The medial collateral ligament runs down the inside of the knee and provides stability to the inside of the joint. It is commonly injured in tackles coming from the outside.
Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL)
A torn anterior cruciate ligament is a serious injury which can sideline players for up to 6 months. In the run-up to the world cup, this injury has so far been avoided. Lets hope it stays that way!
Injury to the ankle ligaments is so common that it is rarely given the respect it deserves.
Meniscus (Cartilage) Injury
Torn cartilage or meniscus is an injury usually caused by compression and rotation at the knee joint. It is often sustained during tackles, or sudden changes of direction. Although the severity of the injury varies considerably, it would be more than enough to end a players tournament.
Fractures to any of the bones in the leg, typically the Tibia or Fibula, can occur as a result of a high impact tackle.
Injuries to the calf muscles, sustained from soccer, usually involve either a calf strain or a contusion. A strain may occur from a sudden burst of speed or change in direction and a contusion is the result of a direct impact to the calf muscles.
Achilles Tendon Rupture
A tear or rupture to the achilles tendon is a severe injury which could see a player out of action for up to 6 months.
