The Philippines call center industry is at the top of the global market. It is one of the fastest growing industries because the Philippines has all of the necessary components to make this industry successful. According to the Philippine Business Survey Agency in a study last year 2008, there are certain dominant types that can be observed. Here are the types of call center agent applicants from the said Philippine survey. Those who have just graduated from the University This is perhaps the most popular type of employee applicant that call agents would have. The contact center is a very popular place for such fresh grads to apply to. For one thing, it is an entry level position. Also, the pay is good as compared to others and it is easier to get hired. A lot of these fresh graduates therefore think of the call center path not as a full career but simply as a stepping stone. Call center culture attracts a lot of young people who are unsure of career paths and just want to earn money fast. Those who are still studying or have stopped their studies One does not need to be a college graduate to enter into a contact center job. As long as one has all the necessary skills, traits, and English speaking proficiency, one can easily qualify as a contact center agent. And since the industry provides easy acceptance and highly competitive pay, students who may have encountered financial difficulty or simply want to work because they have just a thesis or enough time on their hands go and apply as agents. Those who are above forty and need income Now this is a small category but it still something prevalent in the industry. The Philippines call center industry does not discriminate age as much as other industries, as long as one’s voice and accent is presentable and one is highly capable of doing the job. There are many professions that require people to be below a certain age. This applies to jobs where the employee deals or communicates with customers such as in restaurants. Since a lot of these over forty need income too, they can simply apply at a contact center and all they will need is some training in order to become professionals once again. Those who came from other call centers This is the most stably growing set of employees that stay in the call center industry. Since most BPO’s go for contractual basis, capable agents are let go of a number of times. Other contact centers snatch up these agents because they have already undergone through the training process that lasts from one to three months. This is saves the companies valuable time in training. It also assures them that these employees know the job well enough already. Those who came from other professions Since other professions may pay lower wages than those in Philippines call center companies, and since a lot of these professions are really very difficult and stressful as compared to the job of an agent, some of these professional choose to move careers and apply to call centers. This is also usually due to a time of financial need. Maria Lopez is a professor of Media studies and Sociology at the Iowa University and does freelance journalistic work in her free time.
