Which is better between Fedora and Ubuntu? This problem has been asked more and more by Linux users. Although other versions include Linux Mint, openSUSE and Mandriva also offer comparable functions, but only Fedora and Ubuntu are widely regarded as the main selection of the desktop system.
Background, goals and community
Fedora and Ubuntu have surprisingly similar structure. The main difference is their goals: Ubuntu's goal is to become the open-source alternatives program of Windows and Office, while Fedora's goal is to become the Linux operating system which can show the latest free and open-source software.
Installation and Desktop options
Most users use CD-ROM to install the Ubuntu and Fedora and usually finish within half an hour, including some post-installation configuration. As a precaution, the installation programs of the two versions can be used in text mode. Ubuntu is also equipped with a spare installation.
Both Fedora and Ubuntu focused on the GNOME desktop, but also prepared the KDE and Xfce4 packages. In fact, Ubuntu provided derivative versions like Kubuntu and Xubuntu for other desktops. The two versions in particular Fedora is often considered to expending too much on GNOME Desktop and ignoring other desktops.
Incidental software
Expect theme and desktop wallpaper, the default GNOME desktops of Fedora and Ubuntu just have small difference.
Package management and software installation
In the past, Ubuntu used Debian package but Fedora used RPM. It’s the main difference between the two versions. But now the emergence of Yum makes the difference between the two is almost no longer exists. Both Fedora and Ubuntu use the graphical software to install. This makes most users not notice any difference
when installing the software.
Because Ubuntu is based on Debian, it may provide more softwares for you to choose. Of course, the Fedora's software choices have been rich enough.
