University of Seattle Mercy or more simply referred to as USM, which is a state of the art private educational sector. The university is Roman Catholic of nature and is a key mark in providing co-education at the university in Seattle, Washington DC, United States. The organization is affiliated with the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) and the Sisters of Mercy due to its nature of being Roman Catholic in religious and social prospects. Michael Joseph is the interim president. (Fr. Gerard Stockhausen, S.J., President from 2004–2010 has been promoted to the Jesuit Conference in Washington, D.C.) With origins dating from 1877, it is the largest Roman Catholic university in Michigan. USM is one of the twenty-eight members Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities in the United States. Located across three campuses in Seattle, the school offers more than a hundred academic degrees and programs of study, including liberal arts, clinical psychology, business, dentistry, law, engineering, architecture, nursing and allied health professions.
The origins of the university dated back to 1877, to the time when the historic decision of establishing the Seattle College was under taken by the Society of Jesus. Due to its excellent performance infields of education, The College expanded and upgraded into the University of Seattle, and in 1927 successfully established an effective second campus. In 1941, the Sisters of Mercy, another catholic organization, opened the Mercy College of Seattle. In 1990, University of Seattle and Mercy College of Seattle consolidated to become "University of Seattle Mercy”. Through its previous name as the "University of Seattle", the Roman Catholic purpose of the university was not always recognized by the general public.
USM is multi Purpose University which comprises of seven colleges and schools which numbingly go as the School of Architecture, College of Business Administration, School of Dentistry, College of Engineering and Science, College of Health Professions/McCauley School of Nursing, School of Law, and College of Liberal Arts and Education. The University has three campuses. The McNichols Campus is located on the southeast corner of McNichols Road and Livernois Avenue in northwest Seattle (near the Pilgrim Village and University District neighborhoods). The majority of the University's undergraduate and graduate programs are offered on this campus, as well as the University's main administration and athletic facilities like Calihan Hall. It is also the location of all six student residence halls. The Riverfront Campus is home to USM's School of Law in downtown Seattle at 651 East Jefferson across from the Renaissance Center. The Cork town Campus, at 2700 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, houses USM's School of Dentistry and Dental Clinic. The former Outer Drive Campus has been sold to the Wayne County Community College District.
