Giving and receiving
Valentines Day cards
dates as far back as the 16th century. Although there are many interpretations about the when, where, how and whys of celebrating Valentine’s Day, the day eventually evolved becoming associated with romantic love during the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. Since then there are numerous mentions of Valentine’s Day in historical accounts, as well as in literature. For example: Valentine's Day is mentioned ruefully by Ophelia in Hamlet (1600–1601), and John Donne celebrated the marriage of Elizabeth, daughter of James I of England, and Frederick V, Elector Palatine on Valentine's Day. The Valentine’s Day verse variations that have become a cliché, based on “The rose is red, the violet's blue, The honey's sweet, and so are you” is found in the collection of English nursery rhymes published in 1784. During the early years, valentines were lovingly made by hand with a great deal of thought going into the written words expressing those loving sentiments. By the beginning of the 1800’s, printers were producing a limited number of cards called “mechanical valentines” with verses and sketches. Paper Valentines made with real lace and ribbons became so popular in England in the early 19th century that the cards were assembled in factories.

Making Valentines Day cards by hand with special papers, ribbons, lace, and other decorations became less popular as the market for mass-produced greeting cards exploded. Mass-produced greeting cards became big business in the 20th century with Valentine’s Day becoming one of those special holidays that sold thousands of Valentines cards along with red roses and boxes of chocolate.
