The creating and exchanging of
Valentines Day Cards
dates as far back as the 16th century. While there are many myths surrounding Valentine’s Day, the celebration on February 14th honoring a Christian martyr named Valentine, was established by Pope Gelasius I in 500 AD. Eventually, during the High Middle Ages when the tradition of courtly love flourished, Valentine’s Day become associated with romantic love. The verse or variations of the verse that has become a cliché on Valentine’s Day cards “The rose is red, the violet's blue, The honey's sweet, and so are you” is found in the collection of English nursery rhymes published in 1784. By the beginning of the 1800’s printers were producing a limited number of cards with verses and sketches, called “mechanical valentines” to differentiate them from hand made cards. Paper Valentines made with real lace and ribbons became so popular in England in the early 19th century that they were assembled in factories. Paper lace, a staple of hand made cards, was introduced in the mid 19th century.

With the introduction of mass-produced greeting cards, making Valentines Day cards by hand with special papers, ribbons, lace, and other ornamentations has became less popular. Mass-produced greeting cards became big business in the 20th century with Valentine’s Day becoming one of those holidays that sold thousands of cards.

Today, if you want to send a more personalized valentine, yet are not arts-and–crafts oriented, it still possible to individualize your Valentines Day cards.
