Digital broadcast systems are what give the HDTV, high definition television, a higher resolution than a standard broadcast TV. For a standard broadcast you are seeing 720 vertical pixels and 480 horizontal lines per screen, called 720 x 480. A HDTV can have many different resolutions but they are at least 720 horizontal lines per screen as opposed to the standard 480, and they can go to 1080 and higher even.A television that can display this HDTV broadcast is necessary to view these high resolutions. A standard TV may allow you to see the HDTV broadcast but it won't be showing you the hgh number of lines, it'll just be the standard display. There are many, many HDTVs on the market now, but be sure it says the display has 720 or 1080 lines per screen. When you see the title it should look something like "Brand name 55 inch 1080p 60hz LCD HDTV" as HDTV should be part of the title along with the number. Buying the highest number lines per screen you can afford will make the resolution of the picture so much better. If you have cable or satellite TV, you will more than likely need an HD receiver. The receiver is normally provided by the cable or satellite company. It accepts the HD signal sent over the cable or satellite and converts it into the format needed to display it on your HDTV. Your HDTV may come equipped with a Qam tuner. A Qam tuner is used to receive unencrypted HDTV signals (channels that are not "premium" channels like HBO, Showtime, etc.). If your TV is QAM tuner equipped, you can connect your TV cable directly to your TV without the need for a special receiver. However, a receiver is still required if you want to watch encrypted channels.A high definition multimedia interface, HDMI, cable will be needed to connect the television to the reciever. It can carry the HD signal properly, standard television cables don't work unless your television has the Qam receiver that can bring some of the unscrambled signals in.The standard type signal can not produce the HD signal necessary to provide the awesome picture on the HDTV. The signal has to be provided by whichever broadcaster is sending their signal out in high definition. An LCD wall mount is going to be required for that new LCD HDTV you just bought.
