Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a condition in which your legs feelextremely uncomfortable while you're sitting or lying down. It is adisorder of the part of the nervous system that affects movements ofthe legs. Because it usually interferes with sleep, it also isconsidered a sleep disorder. People with RLS have strange sensations intheir legs and an irresistible urge to move their legs to relieve thesensations. Individuals affected with the disorder describe the sensations asburning, creeping, tugging, or like insects crawling inside the legs. The sensations range in severity from uncomfortable to irritating topainful. Women are more likely than men to develop this condition.Restless legs syndrome can disrupt sleep and make traveling difficult. RLS symptoms : Uncomfortable Itchy Cramping Creeping Pulling Painful Crawling Tingling Aching Burning Electric Tense Tugging Gnawing It's common for symptoms to fluctuate in severity, and occasionally symptoms disappear for periods of time. Causes: In many cases, no known cause for restless legs syndrome exists. Thecause of restless leg syndrome is unknown in most patients, but manyconditions have been associated with it. RLS appears to be related tothe following factors or conditions, although researchers do not yetknow if these factors actually cause RLS. Some women experience RLS for the first time during pregnancy, especially during their last trimester. However, for most of thesewomen, signs and symptoms usually disappear quickly after delivery. People with low iron levels or anemia may be prone to developingRLS. Once iron levels or anemia is corrected, patients may see areduction in symptoms. LS runs in families in up to half the people with RLS, especially ifthe condition started at an early age. Researchers have identifiedsites on the chromosomes where genes for RLS may be present. Study Says RLS is Linked to ED: The finding does not prove that RLS causes ED, but it raises thepossibility that the two conditions share one or more common causes.Men who had restless legs 5 to 14 nights per month were 16 percent morelikely to have erectile dysfunction compared to men without restlesslegs, while men with more than 15 nights of restless legs symptoms hada 78 percent higher chance of erectile dysfunction. According to Dr. Clete Kushida, president of the American Academy ofSleep Medicine:" based on these findings, it would be a good idea fordoctors to ask their male restless legs patients if they have erectiledysfunction." He suggested that there may be a role for restless legsdrugs in erectile dysfunction treatment, and said the question warrantsfurther research. RLS, a brain disorder that afflicts about 10 percent of Americans, can cause problems falling or staying asleep, according to theRochester, Minnesota-based Restless Legs Syndrome Foundation. The studyis the first to probe the connection between erectile dysfunction andrestless legs syndrome, or RLS, two conditions that have been linked toabnormally low levels of dopamine, a chemical that relays signals inthe brain.
