What positions will be in Short Supply in U.S Job Market?

“Market Watch” in U.S has recently published a comment that although millions of citizens can not hunt for jobs, it is hardly credible to know that the job market will have a great shortage in the next two or three years indicated by a report. The report released by MetLife and Venture said that people born in baby boomers are going to reach retirement age in ten years when the enterprises are difficult to hire new employees to fill the vacancies. Therefore, many companies are now trying to enable their employees to quit smoking, lose weight and exercise.

The report also shows that it will take only two or three years for America to go out of the economic recession , at that time, thousands of job opportunities will emerge from job markets, and the faster the economy develops, the more vacancies will be.

Government predicts that 14.6 million non-farm jobs will be increased from the year of 2008 to the year of 2010, if self-employed, family business and agricultural practitioners included, the number will reach 15.3 million. In addition, the government also predicts that 9.1million citizens will enter the labor market between 2008 and 2018, including the new population and existing workforce, but the immigrants not included. These people will take up 9.60 million vacancies (assuming that no one can have two jobs).

It is expected that 3-4 million vacancies need to be filled in U.S in health care industry at that time. Experts proclaim that one way to fill those vacancies is to retain older employees for companies, since people now have a longer life expectancy than in the past so that they can work longer.

However, here is an opposite opinion claimed by Harry Holzer who is an economist in Georgetown University. He doubts that the supply shortage in job market will occur, holding that the growth of jobs is very limited owing to high technology and globalization, if so, it is only temporary. And he also claims that it is possible for a certain industry to have job vacancy, such as health care industry, but not the entire job market.

However, according to government’s estimates, the following jobs will greatly increase in the next decade:

Nurse, 582,000 vacant jobs,

Family health assistant, 461,000 jobs

Customers service representatives, 400,000 jobs

Food service personnel (including fast food) 394,000 vacancies

Personal and home care, 376,000 vacancies

Retail sales, 375,000 jobs

Office staff, 359,000 vacancies

Accounting and auditing personnel, 279,000 jobs

Nursing assistant, 276,000 vacancies

Teachers of university, 257,000 vacancies.

We can see that job market is improving little by little, so that job hunters must have confidence in the prospective about the economy, believing the recession is temporary and job market will have a dramatic recovery in a few years. Job hunters have to equip themselves by skills and knowledge to seize the good opportunity.
