Contrary to popular belief, nonprofit organizations are also in need of accounting. In fact, they need it as much as for profit organizations do. The level of accounting that they need is even much more complex than what a for-profit organization does. They need to account for the funds that they receive and spend and report everything to the state through financial reports.

These organizations then need to rely on their team of accountants, bookkeepers and clerks to do the job. They all need to work together to keep track of the financial information and make the more specific information ask of them. Everyday, they need to maintain the cash book that includes the receipts and payments as well as the ledger for classification of transactions.

Depending on the region that they are in, some not for profit organizations are exempted from tax, while others are not so it is important that the certified public accountant (CPA) of the organization knows whether or not they are exempted from tax. If they are exempted from tax, then they need to pass yearly financial reports to the US Internal Revenue Service.

The US Internal Revenue Service ask for the specific reports from the accounting for non profit organizations because a non profit organization is mainly liable in letting the public know how much it is receiving and how do they spend that money. Filing the report also ensures that the grants and other income are spent in the right manner. By proper management of the organization’s finances, the accounting process will be simpler and easy to do.

Some non profit organizations rely on their volunteers in doing the non profit fund accounting. However, what these people must know is that this is not advisable for the following reasons: first, the volunteers will not have enough time to devote to the organization that will cause delay and inaccuracies in the project. Plus, they are not experts as well and non profit accounting requires experts since this is more complex.

Lastly, if you are not opting for volunteers then you can choose between hiring a real CPA, looking for a company who will do the entire non profit fund accounting services for you or get software for non profit accounting. Just make sure to think about it first before picking one.
