If you do intend to use article marketing, then of course you should submit articles to the biggest, best article directories out there. If you do this, there's a very good chance that your articles will get indexed quickly, rank highly for the keywords you're targeting and confer solid SEO benefits back to the URLs you've included in your author bio-boxes.

But this is not always the case, unfortunately. This is because while most people who publish your articles on their websites do so according to the conditions required (that is, including the author bio-box links back to your chosen URLs) some do not. Basically they just rip off your work and stick it on their sites as if it is their own.

This is disheartening, to say the least. Of course you can e-mail these webmasters and ask for the links to be included, or just lodge complaints with their web hosts. But it's rare that you get any satisfaction this way. It's usually just a waste of time and energy.

Apart from the annoyance, there's another downside to people publishing your original articles without giving you credit: Sometimes their plagiarized copies of what you've written show up quicker in Google, meaning that your original article directory submission may be perceived as the copy, and thus be penalized in the rankings. Sometimes when you search for the title of your article you'll see that your original is quite a way down the list, under the plagiarized copies! This can happen even when you've submitted the article to a site like Ezine Articles, which is the most highly regarded one out there.

For these reasons it's a really good idea to social bookmark your articles as soon as they've been approved. Doing this means that Google will be alerted very quickly to their existence, and index them swiftly. As a result the article will probably appear in search results quicker than if you had not done so. Also, if the social bookmarking sites are dofollow ones, links from them will lift article URL a bit higher in the rankings – at least for the keywords that you have included in the anchor text you have used for these social bookmarks.

Remember that you don't need to go crazy with these social bookmarking submissions. But if you can do two or three of them as soon as possible, and a couple in the days after that, then that should result in your original article outranking any stolen copies in the search engine results.
