Working of Rapid Prototyping Manufacturing Technology

Rapid Prototyping is the method of using additive manufacturing technology for construction of physical objects automatically. It is basically a group of techniques used to frame a scale model of a part or set up using three-dimensional computer aided design (CAD) data. At first, these were used to produce models and prototype parts. But nowadays, they have wider range of applications that are used to make quality parts and also exhibitions by sculptors.
Rapid prototyping works in the following way. First, a CAD model is made which is then transformed to STL format. The rapid prototyping machine processes the .STL file by creating multiple layers of the model. After the first layer is made, it is lowered by the thickness of the next layer and it goes on till the model is fully complete. The model and supports are eliminated. Then the surface of the model is finished and cleaned.
There are numerous reasons of rapid prototyping . It allows quick correction to a product processing and thus decreases development time. It allows manufacturing, engineering and marketing to have a look at the product in the design process and thus minimizes costly mistakes. It enables changes in the product at an earlier stage before the prices rise to a high level. Keeping in view that the emphasizing objectives of manufacturing firms being increasing the variants of a product, decreasing delivery time, increasing product complexity and decreasing product lifetime before obsolescence, rapid prototyping enhances development of products through effective communication.
