While you may know people who practice yoga and have even read more than few books or magazines on the subject and watched a few videos before, it may have only been recently that you have taken any serious interest in this very ancient blend of physical exercise and meditative practice. In reality you can practice yoga anywhere and anytime with nothing more than a rug or the ground under you, having the right equipment is likely to make the exercises more pleasurable to do and this will make you more likely to stick with it.
One thing that as a beginner you need to realize at the outset is that there is no reason for you to waste your money buying the most expensive, name brand equipment and yoga accessories. Generally when you set out to buy this type of gear, you are only going to end up paying far too much money just because someone famous well known has put their name and face on the box so that they can get paid for the endorsement.
The other side of going shopping this way is the distinct possibility that what you are really going to end up with is a large collection of very expensive yoga equipment that not only did you pay too much for, but that you really don't need and can't use. This is very typical for anyone that is just getting started in a new sport or type of exercise. Remember that just because it is the latest and flashiest new equipment on the market does not necessarily make it the best choice for anyone, let alone someone who is just getting started.
With all of this in mind, what exactly do you need to get started in your pursuit of a healthier body and mind with yoga? No matter what else you choose to buy at a later date, the very first thing you need to invest in is a yoga mat. The most important feature of any yoga mat you are looking at must be that it has a non-slip surface. You will see how important this is as you become more proficient and start to learn the more advanced poses and your hands and feet become more prone to slipping out from under you.
A yoga mat is not like a standard exercise mat in that while it is thick enough to provide you with plenty of padding to allow you to remain comfortable during your exercises, yet not so thick that it prevents you from being able to transition from one pose to another smoothly. The surface of your mat should also be somewhat tacky as you are going to find your hands and feet in some very unusual positions, you need a mat that is going to help them stay in place.
If you are new to yoga, it is highly recommended that you invest in a set of yoga blogs. While you are new to yoga, you are going to be working and stretching many of the muscles in your body that you have probably not used in many years. This can lead to any number of strains and some pain until you have been practicing for a while. The yoga blocks are designed to help reduce some of this strain so that you can continue to exercise and work your way through the pain.
For the most part these yoga blocks are made from high density foam and are used to provide you with extra height and a measure of support that will add not only a measure of extra support, but of safety to each of the various exercises you will be performing during your exercise regimen. By using these block under your hands, heels or hips as you exercise, they add extra stability so that you will be able to achieve full extension of your muscles and as such attain maximum results. You can buy yoga blocks in a variety of different shapes and sizes to fit your body and the exercises you will be performing.
You may also want to invest in one of those big exercise balls that have become popular in other forms of exercise such as Pilates. There are number of yoga exercises that this type of ball can be used successfully with. You will find a full selection of yoga accessories and equipment at very affordable prices at Yoga Accessories and many of the items in the catalog offer buy one get one free specials.
